Comeback Medvedev Claims First Championship in Over Two Years

Nineteen of the Russian's twenty-one championships have been achieved on hard courts

A resurgent Daniil Medvedev secured his initial championship for over two years with success over Frenchman Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

Medvedev, a ex- number one, has experienced a difficult season, achieving just a single victory at the Grand Slams and undergoing a setback at the US Open.

His varied form on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his service game in specific - resulted in him exiting of the elite rankings and eventually parting ways with long-term mentor his previous coach.

Now working with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, he has consistently advanced in the recent weeks - peaking in a tightly fought three-set win over opponent Moutet.

This represents his maiden trophy after the Italian tournament and maiden on a hard court since spring of 2023.

The win also signifies he has secured 21 titles at 21 various events.

"It's the first time I'm at a competition with my children together, so to secure a championship is particularly special," said ranked player the champion.

"This victory is in tribute of my second daughter her name, because the maiden victory I won when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had lost his previous six championship matches, featuring in that event in the past months.

Medvedev's defensive strategy and recurring emotional displays on court had led commentators to doubt if his skill to play at the top level was concluded.

But the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, striving to come to the net and play assertively, backed up by an improved serving game.

Medvedev recovered from a break down in the first set against the challenging Frenchman, securing 4 of the final five points to gain the advantage.

Both players exchanged service breaks in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his first tour championship, gained dominance to create a final set.

He defended four early-game chances in a tight third set before the champion secured a break to fifteen to secure the win.

Fittingly, Medvedev earned victory with a point at the front of the court, with his opponent unable to control a return after over two and a half hours.
