Pat Cummins Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
